  • PlusCare protects you in case you are hospitalized, suffer a broken bone caused by an accident or dismemberment. It also includes a coverage that provides financial relief to your beneficiaries in case of accidental death, among other benefits.

    • Who is the underwriter for this insurance?

    • Caribbean American Life Assurance Company (CALAC) is the underwriter of this coverage. CALAC, their subsidiaries, and affiliates carry on business in Puerto Rico under the name of Assurant®.
    • How do I enroll?

    • How do I know if I am eligible for PlusCare?

    • To be eligible, you must be at least 18 years old and less than 69 years old, and live in Puerto Rico. Also, you must have a deposit account or credit card from Popular.
    • Are there any health questions or a medical exam required to enroll?

    • There are no health questions or medical exams required to determine eligibility.
    • How much does this insurance cost?

    • How do I pay for PlusCare?

    • Your fixed premium will be charged to your selected Popular credit card or deposit account and appear on your monthly statement.
    • What if I miss a premium payment?

    • You have a grace period of 31 days after the due date for the payment of any premium. To receive insurance benefits, your premium payment must be up to date. After the 31-day grace period, your policy will be canceled, and you will not be able to receive benefits.
    • When does coverage begin?

    • If you enroll in the program between the 1st and 10th of the month, the effective date is the 1st of the current month. If you sign up for the program between the 11th and the 30th or 31st of the month, the effective date will be the 1st day of the next month.
    • I enrolled in PlusCare online and was approved. What happens next?

    • A welcome package containing your Certificate of Insurance and Product Summary page will be mailed to the address we have on file for you.
    • Why was my application for PlusCare denied?

    • If I am enrolled in PlusCare, when does this coverage end?

    • Your insurance coverage automatically ends at the earliest of the following dates:
      • The date on which the policy is terminated;
      • The date after the grace period has lapsed;
      • The date on which you turn 75;
      • The date of your death;
      • The date on which Popular closes your account, cancels your card, or withdraws your rights and privileges on your account; or
      • The date on which we receive your request to cancel your insurance coverage
    • What is the daily hospital cash benefit?

    • If you’re hospitalized due to an illness or accident covered under this policy, you will receive a daily benefit up to a maximum of $100.00. The benefit will be paid commencing on the fourth day of confinement for up to 60 days (not necessarily consecutive) with respect to any one (1) event of Injury.


    • What is the broken bone benefit?

    • PlusCare provides you with up to $8,000 in case of suffering a bone fracture due to an accident. We will pay the percentage applicable to the type of fracture, pursuant to the benefits table. For details of types of fracture and benefits, access the Certificate of Insurance


    • What is the accidental dismemberment benefit?

    • In the event you suffer an injury from a covered accident resulting in a loss of a limb or vision, you could receive up to $7,000.
      • Two or more limbs or loss of vision in both eyes: the principal amount of the benefit
      • One limb or loss of vision in one eye: half of benefit



    • What is the rehabilitation benefit?

    • You could be reimbursed up to $7,000 for expenses incurred in medical treatment, supplies, or services, such as rehabilitation therapy, due to an accidental dismemberment. You may receive this benefit up to two (2) years from the date of the accident that caused the dismemberment.


    • What is the accidental death benefit?

    • Your beneficiaries will receive up to $100,000 if you die in a covered accident.


    • What is the final expenses benefit?

    • In the event you die because of a covered accident, your beneficiaries will receive up to an additional $7,000 to help cover funeral expenses.

    • PlusCare is an optional program and can be cancelled at any time. The Insurance Code requires that you notify us in writing your interest in canceling the policy. Please also include your full name, address, product you wish to cancel and certificate or policy number. You can send us the letter
